Of stylised African inspiration, the central vertical band radiating from each side two rows of graduated circular-cut citrines within collet settings, circa 1937, partial maker's mark for Société Groëné Darde. Length: 4.7cm, width 5cm Weight 49.28 grams Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Olivier Baroin.
As can be seen in the works of the Cubists, there was a wave of inspiration that washed over Paris in the early 20th Century influenced by the discovery of African art…in the jewellery world this is perhaps most felt when looking at Belperron’s jewels as she prominently displayed such influences in some of her most iconic designs.
This brooch’s references are abstract but in its essence I see the bold repetitive geometric shapes, the scale, and form in line with her jewels of this inspiration…and most obviously, with her signature treatment of colour…the subtle graduation of colours in these citrines create a sense of depth and movement.
