The rectangular case applied with black and a dark beige enamel background, to a design showing the face of an Ancient Greek figure or theatre mask upon an actor's, the reverse applied with black enamel and motif of common surgical instruments, monogrammed to the bottom right corner, circa 1930, French assay mark for silver and maker's mark for Jean Trotain.
Note: A lacquer cigarette case by Jean Trotain circa 1930. I presume this case was made for a doctor (although a cigarette case for a doctor could seem a slightly niche market these days, it was of course not so ill-advised as a habit once upon a time) due to the medical doctor's head mirror and surgical instruments to the back and the personalisation of the initials to the bottom right corner (themselves in a beautiful Art Deco font)...but the front is open to interpretation. The mask of the healing wisdom of Asclepius (Hippocrates is usually depicted as being bald) the Roman god of healing upon a mortal's face? Or something more personal...I welcome interpretations. As always, not quite knowing the history of pieces is frustrating but it does ignite reveries and makes great food for thought....what ever the significance, it's a powerful image and a great case..
