The annular hardstone box set with a circular micro mosaic plaque to the lid depicting a goldfinch perched on a branch, within a stylised floral border, to an engraved gold border, the lip of both lid and base with similar gold detail, circa 1790, attributed to the Studio Raffaelli di San Sebastianello, Roma. Diameter of box 7.5cm, height: 2.7cm
Notes: This goldfinch pose, background and border are very similar to one of the earliest signed plaques by Raffaelli in 1778, now housed in the Museo Civico di Santa Giulia in Brescia, and is from the collezione Camillo Brozzoni.
The colouration in the border is the product of a technique called 'Millefiori' which indicates a type of polychrome enamel obtained from the union of different wands of various tints which are then fused together and cut resulting in the cross-section displaying geometric shapes composed of contrasting colours. It was another evolution of the second half of the 17th Century.
