Designed as a series of seven annular micro mosaic plaques each depicting a different ancient Greek theatre masks upon a ochre-coloured background, mounted in yellow gold with black enamel accents, French assay marks for gold and maker's mark for unknown atelier, circa 1870. Length 18.5cm
Note: The mosaics themselves would have been made in Italy, they each depict an Ancient Greek theatre mask, and then exported to France where they were mounted in this bracelet (which has french assay and maker’s mark). A testament to how far reaching and prolific the admiration for Italian micro-mosaics had become, by the 19th century both France and England imported Italian mosaics to set in jewels and the most admired mosaicists enjoyed patronage from European royals and the Russian tzar.
